Driving Tips for the UK

The road network covering most of the UK is kept in excellent condition, although country lanes may be narrow with restricted sightlines. Signage is good and the GPS system is comprehensive across the country. City traffic is invariably crowded at rush hours but, in the countryside, roads are often clear.

Many regional cities and towns operate a shuttle service from car parks on their edges to historic pedestrianised city centres, and parking in country towns is easier. Parking anywhere on double yellow lines will get you clamped, towed or heavily fined.

State lawmakers have unveiled an ambitious plan to reform how counties in California set bail for defendants while they wait for their cases to be resolved or go to trial.

New language added Friday to bills by Assemblyman Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) and Sen. Bob Hertzberg (D-Van Nuys) would prevent criminal defendants from having to post money as a condition of release from jail and would shift some power from judges to pretrial services agencies to assess the risks they would pose if allowed out in the community.

Under the legislation, each county would have to establish its own pretrial services agency to track inmates, remind them of court dates and develop “risk-assessment” tools to determine whether a defendant should be released. The programs, in use in other states, allow court and pretrial staff to use data and other evidence to determine whether a person is a risk to the public or likely to flee their charges.

“The bottom line is we are trying to get to the point that the determining factor for pretrial release is not the size of your wallet, but the nature of your risk,” Hertzberg said. “Are you a risk to society? Are you a public safety risk?”

Bonta and Hertzberg said they have assembled a broad coalition of organizations and lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to push the bail reform forward. Debate over the issue has raged nationwide and has often been waged in court, with cities and counties across the country facing lawsuits over policies that some legal experts say have turned jails into modern-day debtors’ prisons.

In California, where at least two federal lawsuits over bail practices are pending, 2015 data from the Public Policy Institute of California found more than 60% of people in county jails were awaiting either trial or sentencing.

When a person is arrested, judges set bail according to a county fee schedule based on the gravity of the alleged crime. Defendants must post the amount upfront or pay a 10% fee to a bond company before they are let go.

Those who can’t afford to do so can remain incarcerated up to an additional 48 hours before they are formally charged and arraigned. A judge then sets the conditions for release before trial, weighing such factors as whether a defendant is a threat to his or her community.

Under the proposed legislation, Bonta and Hertzberg said the money bail system would not be completely eliminated, and judges would still have final discretion to use it in compelling cases.

Defendants charged with violent crimes or certain misdemeanors, including some domestic violence offenses, would continue to be held in jail until their arraignment before a judge. Defendants who commit a crime while they are released when their case is pending would be subject to a hearing.

But the legislation would require that bail be set based on a person’s income.

“We didn’t want to have unbridled judicial discretion,” Bonta said. “We wanted to provide policy guidance to help determine where that discretion is exercised and how.”

The bills are likely to face tough opposition at the Capitol, where legislation requiring counties to use risk-assessment tools when preparing pretrial reports for inmates has failed in the past.

Significant questions remain, such as the cost of the proposed pretrial services to provide inmates with support and monitoring, including the use of GPS devices. And bail bonds companies point to the potential cost to taxpayers. Other opponents argue money bail works, protecting the community while allowing defendants to fight their cases.

Wendy Zamutt, who owns a bail bond business in San Diego, said she is trained to screen her clients and provides support to every one. But the laws must be strict on criminals, she said.

“They are not people who forgot to bring their library books back on time,” she said. “We can’t allow these people to return on a promise. It doesn’t work. It has never worked.”

Criminal justice advocates counter the proposed laws could lead to long-term savings from keeping fewer defendants in jail. Incarceration expenses vary widely across the state, but counties spend an average of more than $100 per day to jail each defendant, according to the Public Policy Institute of California.

Mica Doctoroff, a legislative advocate with the American Civil Liberties Union of California’s Center for Advocacy and Policy, said the money bail system is not cost-effective and fuels poverty and racial disparities in the system. It “is not working for California,” she said.

Then there is the human toll, Bonta said. Time in jail can cost someone their car, their jobs, their kids.

“Many will take pleas when they shouldn’t have been detained in jail in the first place,” he said.

The average cost of auto insurance has inched up in the Garden State for the first time in years, according to new data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Industry representatives and the state’s insurance regulator say the rising cost of personal injury protection, or PIP, coverage largely is to blame.

The combined average price of insuring a personal vehicle in New Jersey rose to $1,218 in 2009, the most recent data available, up from the $1,198 the year before, according to a NAIC study released Tuesday. This figure takes into account the cost of liability, collision and comprehensive auto insurance.

Similarly, the average expenditure per insured vehicle, or NAIC’s estimate of what consumers actually spent on auto insurance, was $1,101 in 2009, up from $1,081 in 2008. This figure is based on the assumption that all drivers carry liability insurance but not necessarily collision or comprehensive coverage, officials wrote.

NAIC is an umbrella organization for state insurance regulators and its studies of insurance costs, despite lagging several years, are regarded as the most authoritative.

According to its report, costs in New Jersey remain slightly below where they were in 2007, when the combined average premium for personal vehicles was $1,228. Costs also were significantly down from where they were in 2005, when the average premium was $1,337.

The new study found that New Jersey kept its place as being the third most expensive auto insurance in the nation. The state, which a decade ago had the highest rates in the nation, now trails Louisiana and Washington, D.C. where the average 2009 combined premiums were $1,270 and $1,265, respectively.

Insurance industry representatives and the state’s insurance regulator say the growing cost of PIP coverage, which pays for medical expenses associated with auto accidents regardless of fault, explain the price hikes.

New Jersey’s rates were driven down after a series of reforms in 2003 attracted more auto insurers to the state, and carriers began competing for policyholders, said Deana Lykins, president of the Insurance Council of New Jersey.

“This competition shielded the public from the increasing problem of unrestrained PIP costs,” she said.

Now that most carriers are back in the state, policyholders are starting to feel the effect of unconstrained medical costs and fraud, she added. PIP costs in New Jersey are the second-highest in the nation, having grown by 40 percent since 2004, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

High PIP costs accounted for about 50 percent of the rate increases in 2008 and 2009, said Marshall McKnight, a spokesman for the state Department of Banking and Insurance. The average rate for auto insurance increased 6.4 percent in 2010, he added.

“But New Jersey consumers continue to shop around and adjust coverage, which reduces their costs,” he added. Sixty-six companies underwrite private passenger auto insurance in New Jersey.

Lykins and others said they are hopeful that pending reforms, if passed, will help tame expenses as well.

“Nobody wants to repeat the bad old days, when auto insurance was in crisis in New Jersey,” said Frank O’Brien, a regional manager for industry group Property & Casualty Insurance Association of America.

DOBI has proposed new restrictions on PIP coverage.

Meanwhile a bill pending in the state Legislature would beef up the state’s anti-insurance fraud laws.

The NAIC report singles out other cost factors in New Jersey.

For example, the state historically has paid out two to four and, at points, six times the national average in dividends to policyholders, officials wrote.

If dividends were included in premiums, then both average expenditures and combined average premiums would be reduced.

A variety of other factors in addition to medical costs influence rates as well, such as population and traffic density and crime rates, NAIC officials noted.

This paper reviews the research literature on electronic health record (EHR) systems. The aim is to find out (1) how electronic health records are defined, (2) how the structure of these records is described, (3) in what contexts EHRs are used, (4) who has access to EHRs, (5) which data components of the EHRs are used and studied, (6) what is the purpose of research in this field, (7) what methods of data collection have been used in the studies reviewed and (8) what are the results of these studies.


A systematic review was carried out of the research dealing with the content of EHRs. A literature search was conducted on four electronic databases: Pubmed/Medline, Cinalh, Eval and Cochrane.


The concept of EHR comprised a wide range of information systems, from files compiled in single departments to longitudinal collections of patient data. Only very few papers offered descriptions of the structure of EHRs or the terminologies used. EHRs were used in primary, secondary and tertiary care. Data were recorded in EHRs by different groups of health care professionals. Secretarial staff also recorded data from dictation or nurses or physicians manual notes. Some information was also recorded by patients themselves; this information is validated by physicians. It is important that the needs and requirements of different users are taken into account in the future development of information systems.

Several data components were documented in EHRs: daily charting, medication administration, physical assessment, admission nursing note, nursing care plan, referral, present complaint (e.g. symptoms), past medical history, life style, physical examination, diagnoses, tests, procedures, treatment, medication, discharge, history, diaries, problems, findings and immunization. In the future it will be necessary to incorporate different kinds of standardized instruments, electronic interviews and nursing documentation systems in EHR systems.

The aspects of information quality most often explored in the studies reviewed were the completeness and accuracy of different data components. It has been shown in several studies that the use of an information system was conducive to more complete and accurate documentation by health care professionals. The quality of information is particularly important in patient care, but EHRs also provide important information for secondary purposes, such as health policy planning.


Studies focusing on the content of EHRs are needed, especially studies of nursing documentation or patient self-documentation. One future research area is to compare the documentation of different health care professionals with the core information about EHRs which has been determined in national health projects. The challenge for ongoing national health record projects around the world is to take into account all the different types of EHRs and the needs and requirements of different health care professionals and consumers in the development of EHRs. A further challenge is the use of international terminologies in order to achieve semantic interoperability.

Disability Insurance

To help protect your income in the event of a disability, the State provides eligible employees with Short-Term Disability (STD) Insurance. Employees who regularly work at least 30 hours or more each week are eligible to enroll in Optional Long-Term Disability (LTD) Insurance on a voluntary basis. For the FY 2017-18 plan year both the STD and Optional LTD plans will be provided through the Unum Insurance Company.

Short-Term Disability (STD) Insurance
The State provides most benefit eligible employees with short-term disability insurance which pays up to 60% of your weekly pre-disability income, up to a maximum STD weekly benefit payment of $3,000 per week (on or after 7/1/2017), for up to 150 days during any 12 month period, following the required STD benefit waiting period which is 30 days or until the end of all sick leave, whichever is longer. You are automatically enrolled into the short-term disability insurance plan and coverage is effective the first day of the month following your date of hire.

However, your STD insurance effective date will be delayed if you are not in active employment because of injury, sickness, temporary layoff, or leave of absence on the date that your STD insurance would otherwise become effective. Your STD insurance will become effective the first day of the month following your return to active employment.

What Disabilities Will Not Be Covered Under Your Unum STD Plan?
The Unum STD plan does not cover any disabilities caused by, contributed by, or resulting from the employee’s:

  • intentionally self-inflicted injuries
  • active participation in a riot
  • loss of a professional license, occupational license or certification
  • commission of a crime for which the insured has been convicted

STD Plan Exclusions
Your Unum STD plan will not cover a disability due to war, declared or undeclared, or any act of war.
Your Unum STD plan will not pay a benefit for any period of disability during which the insured is incarcerated.

Taxation of STD Benefits
Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 105 indicates that STD benefits, as sick pay, are

to be included in the gross income of employees if the employer pays part or all of the premium for the STD coverage. In these situations, the STD disability benefits received by the employee are subject to federal taxation. The State of Colorado pays the entire STD insurance premium which means that the STD benefits received are 100 percent taxable to the employee.

PERA Defined Benefit Vested Employee Unum Short-Term Disability (STD)
Employees with at least five years of PERA Defined Benefit (DB) Retirement Plan covered employment service may be eligible for PERA STD benefits. The Unum STD insurance coverage will always coordinate with an employee’s PERA STD coverage. The PERA STD benefits will always be the primary STD benefits and will be an offset to Unum’s STD benefits.

Optional Long-Term Disability (LTD) Insurance
Eligible employees who regularly work at least 30 hours or more each week can choose Optional Long-Term Disability (LTD) insurance, but must pay the entire premium each month. LTD premiums for FY 2016-17 are determined by salary, age and PERA Defined Benefit (DB) Retirement Plan vesting status. Optional LTD premiums are deducted from pay post-tax.

IMPORTANT—Guaranteed Acceptance for New Hires
If you elect to enroll in the Optional LTD Insurance plan as a new hire you will automatically be enrolled into the Optional LTD insurance plan without having to prove good health. Your Optional LTD insurance will become effective the first day of the month following your date of hire.

What Disabilities Will Not Be Covered Under Your Unum Optional LTD Plan
Your Unum Optional LTD plan does not cover any disabilities caused by, contributed by, or resulting from the employee’s:

  • intentionally self-inflicted injuries
  • active participation in a riot
  • loss of a professional license, occupational license or certification
  • commission of a crime for which the insured has been convicted
  • pre-existing condition

What is a Pre-Existing Condition? The employee has a pre-existing condition if:

  • the employee received medical treatment, consultation, care or services including diagnostic measures, or took prescribed drugs or medicines in the 3 months just prior to the employee’s effective date of Optional LTD coverage; and
  • the employee’s disability begins in the first 12 months after the employee’s effective date of Optional LTD coverage.

Optional LTD Plan Exclusions

  • Your Unum Optional LTD plan will not cover a disability due to war, declared or undeclared, or any act of war.
  • Your Unum Optional LTD plan will not pay a benefit for any period of disability during which the insured is incarcerated.

Taxation of Optional LTD Benefits
The employee’s Optional LTD benefits are not subject to federal taxation because an employee pays 100% of the Optional LTD premium on a post-tax basis which means that the Optional LTD benefits are not included in the gross income of the employee.

PERA Defined Benefit Vested Employee Unum Optional Long-Term Disability (LTD)
Employees with at least five years of PERA Defined Benefit (DB) Retirement Plan covered employment service may be eligible for PERA Disability benefits. The Unum Optional LTD insurance coverage will always coordinate with an employee’s PERA Disability coverage. The PERA Disability benefits will always be the primary Disability benefits and will be an offset to Unum’s Optional LTD benefits.

Monthly premium rate is a percentage of an employee’s monthly covered compensation. Rates can be found in the Disability Information section below.

Example of Premium Calculation
If you are vested in the PERA Defined Benefit (DB) Retirement Plan, age 42, with a monthly covered salary of $4,000, your monthly premium would be $7.20 per month (the age 42 PERA Vested premium rate is .0018, multiplied by monthly covered salary of $4,000 = $7.20 per month).

Cerebral Palsy

Maybe someone at your school has cerebral palsy — or perhaps you have it and you’ve been dealing with it your whole life. As we become more aware of appearance and body image. it can be tough to be in a wheelchair or to have people tease you about the way you walk. But lots of teens with CP don’t let it hold them back. They do just what everyone else does.

What Is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disorder of the brain. Normally, the brain tells the rest of the body exactly what to do and when to do it. Because of how CP affects the brain, a person might not be able to walk, talk, eat, or move the way most people do.

CP affects a person’s muscle tone and ability to coordinate body movements. People with CP have trouble controlling their muscles. How a person is affected all depends on what part of the brain is involved.

How Does Cerebral Palsy Affect People?

The three types of cerebral palsy are:

  1. Spastic (pronounced: SPASS-tik) CP is the most common type of CP. People with spastic CP can’t relax their muscles or the muscles may be stiff.
  2. Athetoid (pronounced: ATH-uh-toid) CP affects the ability to control the muscles of the body. A person’s arms or legs may flutter and move suddenly.
  3. Ataxic (pronounced: ay-TAK-sik). People with ataxic CP have problems with balance and coordination. Their movements may seem shaky.

People with CP can have mild cases or more severe cases. It all depends on how much of the brain is affected and which parts of the body that section of the brain controls. If CP affects both arms and both legs, a person might need to use a wheelchair. If CP only affects the legs, someone may walk in an unsteady way or have to wear braces or use crutches.

If CP affects the part of the brain that controls speech, a person with CP might have trouble talking clearly or not be able to speak at all. Some people with CP also have learning disabilities or behavior problems, though many don’t have these issues. Others can have medical problems like seizures or epilepsy. or hearing impairment.

What Causes It?

In most cases, doctors don’t know exactly what causes CP. They do know that it’s the result of damage to the brain — either while a baby is in the womb or in the first few months or years after the baby is born.

Babies have a higher chance of having CP if they are born early or if they’re very underweight at birth. Babies who don’t get enough oxygen during or right after birth also have a higher chance of having CP. So do babies who need to be on a ventilator (a machine to help with breathing) for several weeks or more after birth.

CP is not contagious, so people can’t catch it from other people. Even a mother with CP can’t pass it on to her unborn baby.

What Do Doctors Do?

Doctors diagnose CP when kids are young, so by the time people reach their teens, they usually know they have CP and are used to living with it.

With CP, the problem with the brain will not get any worse as people get older. For example, someone who has CP that affects only the legs won’t develop CP in the arms or have problems with speech later on.

Although CP doesn’t get worse over time, how it affects someone’s body can change as the person grows or develops. For example, some teens with CP may develop dislocated hips (when the bones that meet at the hips move out of their normal position) or scoliosis (curvature of the spine).

Because CP affects people differently, there are lots of ways to treat and manage it. Some teens have only mild problems with movement. Others need crutches or wheelchairs to get around. Doctors, parents, teachers, therapists, and the person with CP all work together to develop the best treatment plan.

Teens with CP may work with these experts:

  • a pediatric orthopedist
  • a developmental pediatrician who looks at how the person is growing or developing compared with other teens
  • a pediatric physiatrist (or rehabilitation physician), who helps kids with disabilities of many kinds
  • therapists, like physical therapists to help with movement, occupational therapists to help with skills like handwriting, and speech therapists

Some teens with CP take medicines to relax their muscles (in the case of spastic CP) or to help control seizures. And some might have special surgeries to keep their arms or legs straighter and more flexible.

Coping With Cerebral Palsy

Puberty can be especially challenging for people with CP. Rapid growth can cause weight gain and clumsiness in any teen, but can make it even more difficult for someone with CP to move around. A person’s muscles can become tighter as the bones grow, which can restrict movement even more.

If you have CP, what you’ll do depends on your CP. One thing you can do is to get more involved in your medical care wherever possible. Keep up with your appointments, including any physical or other therapy visits. This is a time when your medical team will want to keep an eye on you and adapt your treatment or therapy as you grow.

Many guys and girls with CP can do the same sorts of things that other teens do, like enjoying extracurricular activities, listening to or playing music, hanging out with friends, reading, going to the mall, and dating, to name just a few.

Helping a Friend Who Has CP

If you know someone who has CP and you’re wondering how to help, just treat that person the way you would anyone else. Some people with CP might need extra assistance once in a while, like when reaching for something. Help out — just as you would with anyone else — without making a big deal about it. If you can’t understand what a person with CP is saying or if it takes longer to do things, give him or her extra time to speak or move.

And don’t be afraid to talk to a friend about what it’s like to live with CP. Everyone wants to fit in, and being in a wheelchair or having other physical problems can make someone self-conscious or feel left out. So if you know someone with CP, try to be welcoming and include him or her in what you’re doing.

Law of Agency- Insurance Brokers vs. Insurance Agents
1) Insurance Brokers – A broker is a representative of the policy owner that acts as a marketing mediator between the insurer and the policy owner.
2) Insurance Agent – An agent is a legal representative of the insurance company authorized to offer the sale of its goods and services. An agent’s authority to legally bind the insurer stems from three sources- Express, Implied, or Apparent Authority.

Company\’s Appointment of Agent to act on its behalf
i.e. agent is given the authority to solicit applications (agent agreement)

Public is led to believe the individual has this authority
i.e. agent runs TV ads noting themselves as a rep of the company

Insurance contracts are considered to be aleatory because the outcome is affected by chance and may be unequal.

Insurance contracts are considered unilateral because only the insurance company (insurer) makes a promise under the contract. The insurer promises to pay a benefit upon the happening of a certain event, such as an auto accident, death, disability, etc. The applicant does not make any promise- they can even elect to stop paying premiums if they desire. 2017 Honda CR-V EPA-Rated up to 34 MPG Highway

EPA fuel economy numbers have been released for the 2017 Honda CR-V. and it looks like the new small crossover will be even more fuel-efficient than before. It achieves up to 28/34 mpg city/highway, for a combined 30 mpg with the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine.

When paired with all-wheel drive and the aforementioned 190-hp turbo engine, fuel economy dips just slightly to 27/33/29 mpg city/highway/combined. Honda will still offer last year’s 2.4-liter four-cylinder on the base LX trim level, and that model is rated 26/32/28 mpg with front-wheel drive and 25/31/27 mpg with all-wheel drive.

The new fuel economy ratings put the CR-V ahead of its competitors. The 2017 Toyota RAV4 tops out at 23/30/26 mpg unless you opt for the separate Hybrid model, which nets 34/30/32 mpg. The CR-V also bests the 2017 Kia Sportage (which achieves up to 23/30/26 mpg), 2017 Subaru Forester (26/32/28), 2017 Nissan Rogue (26/33/29), 2017 Ford Escape (23/30/26), and the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox (21/31/25).

Honda’s fifth-generation CR-V rides on the same compact global platform as the Civic, and receives updates inside and out. It’s 1.5 inches longer than the previous version, an inch taller, and has a 1.6-inch longer wheelbase.

Honda has begun production on the new CR-V in East Liberty, Ohio. In addition to the Ohio plant, CR-Vs will also be made in two other North American locations: Greensburg, Ind. and Alliston, Ontario. The 2017 Honda CR-V goes on sale this winter.

Westminster s Honors College offers a distinctive course of study for academically and intellectually prepared students who want to challenge themselves. While the core of the Honors College is a specially designed menu of team-taught seminars that replace Westminster s general education requirements, the college provides its 180 Honors students with other enriched opportunities like leadership training, mentoring and funding for research, meetings with visiting speakers, writing awards, and access to unique study abroad opportunities. Most importantly, these high-achieving students feel a sense of shared purpose and community that grows out of the distinctive learning environment.

If you have not purchased books for a class early on, go ahead and wait until you’ve been to class once or twice and found out if any books will not be used. You’ll have to balance the risk of getting a bad deal vs. the risk of having to sell back a used book you never opened.

    Don’t forget about international editions. They’re generally exactly the same as their American counterparts, except they often come only in paperback, and the pages may feel a bit different.

    If your Internet search for the ISBN brings up a lot of unrelated items, try entering the ISBN along with the letters “ISBN” in the search bar.

    The best time to buy is between semesters, when people online are trying to get rid of their old books, but before people are buying new ones. It’s usually between 2 and 4 weeks before classes start. If you track sale prices over time, you can see the dip, then a radical increase. Buy when the price is low, but you still have at least 2 weeks for shipping before school. If you want to sell, try selling the first week of school, or the week before when everyone is running around like madmen.

    Consider electronic versions of textbooks from sites like iChapters or Safari. Online books can’t be resold but they often sell for as little as fifty percent of a new book’s price. Classic literature no longer under copyright, can be downloaded for free at sites like Bartleby and Project Gutenberg.

    If you are taking a literature course, consider buying individual books instead of the anthology. Usually an up-to-date anthology will run at at least $80, but if you look on the syllabus, you’re usually not reading more than 12 books/stories. These are usually classics that have been published over and over, and will run at about 50 cents on Amazon. So if each book costs $4 including shipping, that’s $48 instead of $80. If you are doing this, make sure to Google short stories, as many are free online. Also, you can resell these books to a local used bookstore, usually for credit, which will enable you to buy more classics without any money changing hands. (All used bookstores have an abundance of classics, so be sure to check there too and save on shipping.)

    Using more than a few online book resellers might not be beneficial. Don’t waste time and confuse yourself with multiple sites; focus on finding what you need, especially if the prices all appear to be about the same.

    Look for unofficial off-campus bookstores. Sometimes they are 10%-20% cheaper than the on-campus bookstore.

    If a search engine search isn’t very fruitful, try searching directly at online booksellers’ sites.

    Try to search in search engines that specialize in book searches, like,,,, or similar. They compare prices from different online vendors.

    Find out if any books are optional, and think twice about buying them. Some optional books are really quite necessary, while others aren’t. Ask your professor or TA for advice if in doubt, and consider your own study habits. If you tend to ignore the optional materials anyway, then there’s no point in wasting your money on it.

    When shopping online, try to shop with some sort of rewards program and use a points-accruing credit card if you can. This way, you’ll be getting an additional (albeit deferred) savings on your purchase. Some bookstores have their own affiliate programs. Sign up for the program, then buy all your textbooks through your ‘referral link.’ Convince others to do the same (splitting the money, maybe) and altogether you could save a half decent amount of money.

    It may be worth getting a membership with stores which offer 10% off. Even when paying membership per year, after getting 2 semesters’ worth of books, it’s something to consider.

    Most websites will offer free shipping and can get to you within 3 days. Some areas could get the order the same day.

    If you and a friend have the same class, but at different times of the day, work out a deal with them (like supporting them half of the cost of the book, etc.) to let you borrow their book every day for the time that you need it, then return it to them between classes. This tactic works even better if you share a dormitory with them, as it will be easier to locate them.

    If you have a friend or family member who has recently done the course you’re doing, be sure to ask them first if they still need their textbooks. They may be happy to lend or even give them to you for nothing.

    Allow ample time for your book to arrive for the new semester. It’s normally okay for you not to have the book for the first few days of class, but if you procrastinate, you may be forced to go to the bookstore and it’ll cost you.

    Remember when getting the book from the library that the library giveth and the library taketh away. Sometimes the library will request you return the book mid-semester due to high demand for the book. (i.e. other frugal students like yourself want the book too.)

    Always make sure you’re purchasing the right book, especially if you’re buying online. Remember, sometimes the correct edition of a book is absolutely necessary, and if you get the wrong book, you’ll end up either paying for two books or pay shipping to return one.

    Weigh your risks when purchasing a used book that might not be in the best condition. There could be missing pages that would be critical for studying.

    Used books don’t always save you money. If you buy a used book but there is a software package bundled with the new texts, you won’t get the software and may not be able to get it. If it’s required for class, you’re out of luck. At the very least, you will have to buy it separately, which could end up costing you more than the new textbook bundle.
