Advantage Car Rental – Denver

Denver International Airport EZ Car Rental

Wow, I have never received such poor customer service from a company and on multiple instances. I highly recommend NOT using EZ Rent-A-Car (especially at the Denver International Airport).

In early June (2010) I made a reservation for 2 weeks in late June/early July. I received a confirmation and wanted to confirm it was in their system after a few days. (It has happened before that you have a confirmation somewhere then when you show up, it’s no where to be found so I always double check now).

I called the Denver station and asked the agent to please confirm the reservation was in the system. He rudely answered; did you get the confirmation email? I responded; I would just like to make sure it’s in your system, I made it a few days ago and want to verify it’s correct. He snapped back with, if you got a confirmation code it’s in there. To which I said; would you please humor me and check? Ugh, Please Hold!! , says the obviously bothered agent.

After waiting on hold for approximately 5 mins. someone picks up the line and waits there saying nothing while I say; hello. Hello? then *click*. The agent hung up on me.

I tried them back and got a message for the station for the next 10 mins. saying they were unavailable and to try back. Unbelievable to me that I couldn’t get them to verify a reservation! So I emailed their customer service explaining my frustration. I did receive a response back from Andrew there in the Corporate offices. He confirmed the reservation and apologized for their behavior.

Now, everyone has a bad day and a car rental is a car rental, right? WRONG! The reservation was set for 2pm pick-up time. After my flight was canceled and I knew my new itinerary we changed the pick-up time with the 800 number because no one was available at the Denver station. The time was changed to 10:30 flight arrival with new information and was assured everything was good because the airport location was open until midnight.

When I arrive in Denver and call for the shuttle to go get my car, the man informs me; oh no, you were supposed to be here at 2pm. We don’t have your car. I said; No, the time was changed to 10:30pm with your 800 number and they confirmed it would be held. And with their standard of poor customer service he says; We have no cars! Next person please!

WOW, I think to myself. It’s 11pm and I am now supposed to try and get a different rental company to help when they have no cars either. My daughter in the mean-time is calling EZ Rental (Denver office) and speaks with a girl, Tiffany, telling her it’s unacceptable that there is no car when the reservation time had been changed, etc. Tiffany told her; we were over-booked and it’s not my fault. There is nothing I can do about it. Really? I believe it would be the rental company’s fault that they over-booked and didn’t have a car for her. If it’s not their fault then who might be to blame? I imagine most people would be upset in this situation. When she was talking (yes upset and frustrated by the responses she was getting from the agent, Tiffany) she was mid-sentence saying; then if you can’t help I need to know who it is that I contact that’s authorized to deal with this situation.

That’s when it happened again; *click*! The agent just hung up. What customer service manual out there tells you to just hang up on an angry customer? It was amazing to me that 2 different individuals at the Denver location did this on 2 different occasions.

After taking a cab to Denver (as anyone would know who’s flown into Denver; DIA is about 30 mins from anywhere one would be going but likely longer) I called the next morning and spoke with Andrew in Corporate again. He said he’d call the Denver office and speak with them before I called to speak with the manager there to bring him up to speed.

When I called the manager at the DIA station he said; we’ll give you 2 days free out of 14 if you want to come back out to the airport and get a car. NO THANK YOU!!

I did, however, receive from Enterprise exceptional customer service. They got a quote to just $6 higher from what EZ was quoting me. Offered to bring the car to me and waive the fee for having the drop off and pick-up location different. Here was a company that did nothing wrong to begin with but was trying to help me out when EZ Rent-a-car was repeatedly rude, showing extremely poor customer service over and again, yet were not trying to make it right with me either.

I will NEVER use EZ Rent-a-car again and warn you to do the same if you’re coming to Denver! It’s worth a few more bucks to go with a reputable company.

The Importance of Clean Water

Fresh water is one of our most vital resources, and when our water is polluted it is not only devastating to the environment, but also to human health. The US relies on public water systems to treat and deliver just over 44 billion gallons of clean water each day to our homes, schools and businesses. Much of that water comes from rivers, lakes and other surface water sources. Before it is delivered to our homes it is treated to remove chemicals, particulates (e.g. soot and silt) and bacteria. This clean, potable water is then used for cooking, drinking, cleaning, bathing, watering our lawns and so forth.

Approximately 43 million (or 15 percent) of Americans rely on their own private drinking water supplies from groundwater wells.

Those that are served by public sanitation systems rely on sewers to keep untreated wastewater from being released into the environment where it could potentially contaminate our drinking water sources and the natural environment. When the water goes down the drain or is flushed down the toilet, it usually enters a sewer system where it travels to a wastewater treatment plant. The plant treats the wastewater and removes solid waste and other contaminants before releasing the treated water it into the environment. Depending on the type of treatment the wastewater receives, water that is released could have different levels of quality from the water body into which it is released.

Even though our local and federal governments make large investments each year to keep our water clean and safe, our water systems still do not receive the amount of funding needed to keep them working properly. A 2007 EPA survey found that water and wastewater infrastructure projects across the country will need a total of $334.8 billion for the 20-year period from January 2007 through December 2027. Unfortunately, during fiscal year 2012, allotments from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund G totaled only $1.5 billion for all states. As a result of underfunding, much of our aging infrastructure either doesn t work properly or is in need of upgrades, all while strained by a growing population, economic development and climate change variability.

One result of underfunding water infrastructure is massive water main breaks. For example, in 2010, a massive main break in Boston led to an order for the public to boil water that affected 2 million people. According to a 2012 report by The American Water Works Association, restoring, replacing and expanding our existing water systems to accommodate a growing population will cost at least $1 trillion over the next 25 years, if we expect to simply tread water and maintain current levels of service.

Although the majority of American homes are hooked up to public sewer systems, about one-third rely on septic systems underground tanks that receive a household s wastewater, digest it and release treated water into an underground leach field. Septic systems require regular maintenance to ensure that they are not leaching untreated waste.

Likewise, underfunded wastewater infrastructure leads to between 23,000 and 75,000 sewage leaks each year, allowing, on average, 1.26 trillion gallons of untreated sewage to leak into our waterways at a clean-up cost of over $50 billion. According to the EPA, 40 percent of all waterways in the US do not meet national water quality standards, due in large part, to leaking sewer systems. A national survey also found that over half of US rivers and streams are in a state of poor biological condition which harms the viability of those waterways to sustain healthy populations of aquatic insects and other aquatic life.

Furthermore, a recent analysis found that the number of beach closing and advisory days in 2011 reached the third-highest level in the 22-year history of analyses, totaling 23,481 days. More than two-thirds of those were due to bacteria levels that exceeded public health standards, indicating the presence of human or animal waste in the water. Illnesses commonly caused by sewage contamination in water systems include diarrhea, hepatitis A, meningitis, ulcers, myocarditis (inflammation of the heart) and a number of other diseases. These high numbers confirm that the nation’s beaches continue to suffer from serious water pollution.

The quality of our water is directly linked to the quality of our lives. By supporting clean water initiatives and similar measures that improve our water and wastewater treatment systems, we can each have a hand in ensuring clean, safe water for ourselves, our families and our communities.

What these offers mean

Credit card issuers are allowed to purchase data in bulk from consumer credit bureaus, and they scan that information to find people who are likely to be approved for a new account. The data will typically include your credit score, your zip code, your age, and other general factors. Thankfully, these inquiries to your credit information do not affect your credit score in any way.

But even though you may have received one of these offers, there is no guarantee that you will actually be approved when you apply. First of all, the parameters that the card issuer used to generate your preapproval or prequalification are approximate, and the card issuer still reserves the right to deny you based on additional information that you provide in your application. Furthermore, the information it received to generate your preapproval could be out of date by weeks, or even months. So if you have recently applied for several new lines of credit, or worse, failed to make on-time payments to one or more of your accounts, your credit score will suffer and your application could be denied.

The difference between preapproval and prequalification

In the mortgage industry, the terms preapproval and prequalification can have different meanings. A prequalification is generally the first step in the mortgage approval process where you get a general idea of the size of the mortgage that you can qualify for. In order to get a preapproval, you usually have to have a completed mortgage application, have provided documentation on your finances, and have run a credit check.

But when it comes to credit cards, the terms preapproval and prequalification are used interchangeably to indicate the same thing that a card issuer feels that you may be approved for a new credit card, based on some preliminary data on you that it purchased from a credit bureau. In addition, you may sometimes see the term prescreened, which also means the same thing.

Checking to see if you are pre-qualified

Most credit card issuing banks offer portals online where you can check to see if you are preapproved. Select a bank below and see which credit card offers are available.

What should you do with these offers?

Just because you received one of these offers in the mail, it isn’t necessarily a reason to celebrate. If you are interested in applying for that particular card, then you should check to make sure that you received a competitive offer. For example, you might find other offers online that have a higher sign-up bonus. a waiver of the first year’s annual fee, or more generous promotional financing terms than the offer you received in the mail.

Nevertheless, you may receive a preapproved or prequalified offer that is as good or better than what is available online (sometimes they selectively offer better sign up bonuses that aren t available to the general public). But even if this is true, you will want to make sure that the card is the best one available for your needs.

By understanding the meaning of these terms, you can select the ideal card offer, and not give too much weight to marketing material labeled with enticing offers of preapproval or prequalification.

How to position yourself for special offers in the future

You’ll receive the best special offers in the future if you have a higher credit score. If you have had credit problems in the past or you are working on building your credit, you may not find the offers you receive to be the most attractive. However, if you continue to make your payments on time, keep your balances low, and manage the accounts you have responsibly, over time, your credit rating will increase and you’ll see a change in the prequalification offers you receive.
